Darren Williams has been appointed as the new manager of Premier Division side Whitby Town, after Tommy Cassidy left the club by mutual consent.
Cassidy left the club following Saturday's FA Trophy defeat to Woodley Sports, and the decision was made to appoint Williams, who had been playing for the club since joining from Gainsborough Trinity in the summer.
In a statement released to the league on Wednesday evening, the club confirmed Cassidy's departure, and the reasons behind the decision to give the job to the former Sunderland man.
The statement read; "On Monday evening, a meeting was held with the players, and a full and frank discussion took place regarding the poor results this season. The players were confident that results can be turned round with everybody giving 100% and pulling together.
"As a consequence of the team bonding together and not wanting to alienate them by bringing in an outsider, the club have decided to promote within making Darren Williams player/manager, with David Campbell as player/coach - both being guided by the experience of Dennis Wheeler.
"Darren played over 200 games for Sunderland and is anxious to get into management whilst “Cammy” is the club’s longest serving player with over 400 games played."
