Workington denied top spot

By James Gordon

A last-minute equaliser denied Workington the chance to go top of the Northern Premier League N/West Division.

Javelle Clarke rescued a point for Brighouse Town in a 2-2 draw with the Reds, after Reuben Jerome and Sam Smith had turned things round following Daniel Racchi’s opener for the hosts.

It was one of six games played on Saturday, all in-front of fans.

Marine, buoyed by their FA Cup exploits, played only their sixth league game of the season and registered a 4-0 win at Kendal Town.

The Mariners, who face Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur next month, were made to work by the Mintcakes though, with all the goals coming in the second half.

James Devine broke the deadlock on 63 minutes, before Josh Hmami doubled the lead on 79 minutes.

Neil Kengni’s late brace put icing on the cake in front of 146 home fans.

City of Liverpool welcomed their fans back with a bang, as they thumped Pontefract Collieries 4-1.

The game was done as a contest inside the first quarter, as Jack Hazelhurst, Stephen Rigby and Tony Gray put Michael Ellison’s side 3-0 up.

Man of the match Mitch Bryant made it four on the hour, with Jack Lazenby’s late goal scant consolation for the Yorkshiremen.

Colne are up to third thanks to a 2-0 win over Prescot Cables, with Reece Webb-Foster scoring a brace, and Widnes secured local bragging rights as they won their derby at Runcorn Linnets 1-0, Jack Banister scoring the winner two minutes from time.
