Zeverona steps down as chairman

Tony Zeverona has stepped down as the chairman of EVO-STIK League Prescot Cables after more than a decade at the helm.

Zeverona, who took over as chairman in 2005 and is pictured with the Liverpool Senior Cup after the EVO-STIK League North club's triumph in the competition last season, stood down at the promotion-chasers on Tuesday.

Officials at Volair Park paid tribute to Zeverona in a club statement announcing his departure and the start of their hunt to recruit his successor with Cables flying high this season and boosted financially by the arrival of Skelmerdale United as groundshare tenants.

Cables said: "Tony has been the chairman of the club since 2005 and along with other key individuals, was instrumental in steering the club towards a more stable footing and transforming the club into a supporter-owned Community Interest Football Club.

"The resignation will come as a surprise to many due to Tony being a stalwart of the club and a well-known figure within the Merseyside and the North West Non-League scene.

"The club is presently riding high in the EVO-STIK North Division and currently placed third. The club recently won the Liverpool Senior Cup, beating National League side Southport FC in a thrilling final. Attendances have increased significantly at the club and there is every reason to be optimistic about the club’s future.

"However, Tony considers that it is now the right time for someone else to take the helm and steer the club onwards and upwards to secure Cables' future and achieve even greater success. The club would like to place on record their thanks to Tony Zeverona for his hard work and dedication over many years and wishes him well for the future."
