Adam Clayton appointed permanent Matlock Town boss

Matlock Town have appointed Adam Clayton as the club's new manager on a permanent basis.

Clayton will continue in a player-coach capacity, as he did for the final seven games of the season after taking charge on an interim basis back in March following the departure of Ryan Cresswell.

During the run-in, Clayton oversaw two wins, three draws and two defeats as the Gladiators succumbed to relegation from the Northern Premier League's top division.

The 36-year-old has now been handed the role permanently as the club looks to bounce back from relegation at the first attempt.

"I’m delighted to have the opportunity to take the club forward," Clayton said.

"I see this as a great chance to build something really, really good. As a club, we have everything in place to achieve something great and go on an amazing journey together.

"I always knew the next step for me personally was being a coach/manager, and this last month has only confirmed that in my own mind.

"I love the responsibility and all the challenges the role has brought forward so far.

"We are already working tirelessly to keep the players we want, and recruit the players we need to take this club to where we believe it should be."

It has also been confirmed that first team coach Steve Eyre will remain in place on a permanent basis.

The experienced Eyre, who holds a long background in professional coaching and previously spent 21 years at Manchester City, linked up with the Gladiators following Clayton's interim appointment.

John Rimmington will also return to the coaching setup, with sports therapist Mo Bailey continuing in his role as sports therapist.
