Cleethorpes Town announce statement signing of prolific forward

Cleethorpes Town have announced the signing of Worksop Town striker Liam Hughes for an undisclosed fee.

Hughes joined Worksop in the summer of 2022 and has gone on to made 145 competitive appearances for the club, scoring 95 goals.

He played a starring role in the Tigers' promotion to the National League North last season, scoring an impressive 24 goals on their way to play-off success.

Hughes started his career at Cambridge United, progressing through their youth setup and into the first team.

He went on to make 161 appearances for the U’s during his six years at the club.

Hughes earned a move to Scottish side Inverness Caledonian Thistle before moving to Barrow.

Since leaving the Cumbrian side, Hughes has played for a number of sides across the non-league pyramid, with Cleethorpes saying that their new signing's "desire and determination to score goals" has seen him become a firm favourite at each of his former clubs.

"We're delighted to welcome Liam to the football club," Owls boss Craig Rouse said.

"When we were alerted to his possible availability, it was something that we were keen to explore.

"His record at Worksop over the last four years speaks for itself, and the gratitude shown from their staff, players, club officials and supporters show what a fantastic character and player we've acquired.

"From the first conversation, his enthusiasm for the game shone through, and that is something that is going to be really positive in the changing room.

"He has a real hunger for scoring goals and helping the team, and we can't wait to see that bare fruition for our football club."

It has been a busy 48 hours for Cleethorpes, who have also announced the signing of experienced goalkeeper Lloyd Allinson.

Most recently, Allinson has featured more than 100 times for Pontefract Collieries but will now make the move to Step 3 football with Cleethorpes, who sit 12th in the Northern Premier League table.
