Cogill and Spooner join Ashton United

Ashton United have announced two new signings, with Dylan Cogill and Callum Spooner the latest players through the door for the Robins.

Both players have been secured on a permanent basis, having enjoyed fruitful loan spells at the club in 2025/26.

Cogill, 28, is a central defender who came through the ranks at Huddersfield Town, before building his experience with Scarborough Athletic, Gainsborough Trinity and most recently National League North outfit Worksop Town.

As for Spooner, also 28, he makes the switch from Bury having plied his trade at a number of clubs across the north-west.

He made a brilliant impact for Steve Cunningham’s side last season, scoring a memorable stoppage-time winner against Rushall Olympic and a spectacular strike against promoted Hednesford Town on the final day.

On the new arrivals, boss Cunningham said: "I’m delighted to sign Dylan again, but this time on a permanent rather than loan. Dylan is a great character and gives us balance in the defensive area of the squad.

“We are looking forward to working with Dylan in pre-season and seeing the best version of him. He has all the attributes to be a standout centre-back at this level and above, and we are confident he can do that in an Ashton shirt.

"Callum was one of the first names we identified as part of the rebuild. He is a very intelligent player that offers everything you want in a player at these levels: honesty, commitment, enthusiasm and pure quality!

“What is more impressive is that Callum had many clubs interested in him, but having worked together for a short period, he said he only wanted to be part of our project and continue to enjoy his football.

“We have secured another top player that we are looking forward to working with."

The Robins will be looking to build on a 10th-place finish in 2025/26, having finished 10 points adrift of the play-offs.
