Corby Town appoint interim manager after Setchell resignation

Corby Town have announced the appointment of Leon Mettam as interim manager.
Mettam, who began his playing career with the Steelmen, will be assisted by Danny Brooks and takes charge for the first time on Boxing Day away at Bourne Town.
He arrives following the resignation of Gary Setchell last week, amid financial uncertainty at the club which has led to their entire playing squad taking pay cuts.
In a statement addressing their financial position, the club said: "Attendances have been lower than expected, operational costs across the club have risen significantly, and despite constant efforts to bring in more volunteers, sponsors and support, the financial gap has continued to grow."
Corby suffered a heavy 7-0 home defeat at the hands of Long Eaton United last Saturday: a result which leaves them eighth in the NPL Midlands Division, two points outside the play-offs.
Following his departure from Corby as a player, Mettam went on to feature for a number of Step 2 clubs before joining Frickley Athletic, where he took on the role of player/assistant manager.
After leaving Frickley, he returned to playing at Wisbech Town before stepping into the manager’s role just two weeks prior to the start of the season following the departure of their first team manager.
“Corby Town and I go a long way back," Mettam said.
"I arrived here as a raw teenager looking for an opportunity and left as Supporters’ Player of the Year, which really kick-started my career.
"When I became aware of this opportunity, a few conversations quickly made it clear that this was a chance I wanted to take - returning to the dugout at a well-established club with a fantastic fan base.
"I’ve faced tough challenges before. My first management role saw me take a squad into a new season with just one player, and we still achieved a mid-table finish in a very competitive league.
"I’m excited to get started. I know it won’t be easy, but there’s a real opportunity here to get the club back on track, build for the future and, in time, get Corby Town challenging again.”
