Ex-Reading defender joins newly-promoted Bury
Bury have confirmed the signing of former Reading defender John Clarke, who arrives following a short spell on trial at the club.
The 22 year-old has put pen to paper with the Shakers after scoring a brace in a pre-season friendly against Wigan Athletic's Under 21’s last week.
After progressing through the Reading academy setup, Clarke made four appearances for the first team before his career was halted by a serious long-term knee ligament injury.
The Manchester-born left-back then returned to the pitch with Slough Town last season, making eight appearances during their National League South campaign.
Clarke has also represented the Republic of Ireland on two occasions at U19 level.
Following his arrival, Clarke shared his excitement at the prospect of playing under Anthony Johnson and helping the Shakers go in search of their third successive promotion.
“When I first came here, I thought the club itself was a huge club," he said.
"When I spoke to Jonno, the idea and the identity of how they play was a great thing for me.
“The left wing-back position is very attacking, but I’ve got the capability of getting back and defending as well. I think the system suited me the best."
“Coming out of Reading and having a loan in the National League South last season shows he has the required ability”, Shakers boss Johnson said.
“We just need to get him up to speed from a fitness perspective over the next few weeks, as he’s missed the majority of pre-season.
"Once we get him there, he’ll be a brilliant addition for us.”
