Gainsborough Trinity learn FA Cup first round fate

Gainsborough Trinity will host Football League opposition in the FA Cup first round proper, should they overcome Hartlepool United in Tuesday night's fourth qualifying round replay.

The winner of that tie will host League Two side Accrington Stanley, with ties scheduled for the weekend of Saturday 1 November.

Gainsborough came mightily close to reaching the first round proper without needing a replay.

The Holy Blues led National League side Hartlepool United 1-0 until seven minutes from time, when the visitors scored a long-range equaliser which cannoned off the bar and against Gainsborough goalkeeper David Robson.

Russ Wilcox's side are the last remaining NPL representative in this season's FA Cup after defeats for Hyde United and Runcorn Linnets in the fourth qualifying round over the weekend.

Gainsborough will be hoping to emulate last season's run to the second round, where they eventually fell to League Two Harrogate Town.

They will travel to Victoria Park, the home of Hartlepool, on Tuesday night, where extra-time and penalties may be called upon to decide the winner on the night.

It was a similar story last season for Gainsborough, who defeated National League Boston United 4-0 away from home in a fourth qualifying round replay to progress.
