Hyde United manager Nick Spooner resigns

Hyde United have announced that they have "reluctantly" accepted the resignation of manager Nick Spooner.

The club say the departure of Spooner and first team coach Gavin McCann "came as a shock to the board", ending his three-and-a-half-year association with the Tigers.

Formerly a player at the club, Spooner first took charge in February 2022 and successfully saved his side from relegation.

In his first two full seasons in senior management, he led Hyde to successive sixth-place finishes in the Northern Premier League's top division as they narrowly missed out on the play-offs on both occasions.

During Spooner's tenure, they lifted the Cheshire Senior Cup for the first time in 27 years in 2024 after a memorable victory over Crewe Alexandra.

They also reached the final of the Manchester Premier Cup twice.

This season, Hyde have picked up eight points from their opening seven games, scoring the second-most goals of any side in the division while also conceding the joint-most.

Their seven league games have yielded 27 goals - four more than any other team.

They have also enjoyed cup success during the early weeks of the season, reaching the second qualifying round of both the FA Cup and FA Trophy.

“It’s been an absolute privilege to manage this football club over the last number of years," he said.

"I’ve appreciated all the backing from the board and the supporters from the first minute.

"We have had some great times, however it’s the right moment for me to step back and give the opportunity to someone else to take the team forward.

"I wish everyone at the football club all the best."

Paying tribute to their outgoing coach, a Hyde statement read: "The club regret that their tenure here has come to an end and would like to thank Nick and Gavin for all of their hard work over the past three-and-a-half years and wish them all the best for the future, in whatever comes next.

"They will always be welcomed back at the Project Solar Stadium."
