‘I struggle to find words for this guy’ - Shenton astounded by Dyson quality
Avro manager Grant Shenton found it hard to express his admiration for midfielder Taylor Dyson, who was instrumental in clinching the Ro’s sixth victory of the NPL Premier Division campaign against FC United of Manchester on Bank Holiday Monday.
Trailing 3-1 with roughly 10 minutes to play, the 23-year-old curled a superb free-kick into the top corner past Dan Atherton to set the comeback rolling.
Substitute James Simms delivered a fortuitous equaliser two minutes later when his attempted cross caught the post and bounced into the net, before Dyson turned provider to assist James Dwyer for a dramatic winner at Broadhurst Park.
The 23-year-old, who has hit the headlines for set-pieces before, has netted four times in his last three league games - including three free-kicks.
“The maddest thing is at the start of the new season, we got the new balls and he [Dyson] was fuming. He didn’t want to take any free-kicks and was blaming the ball for not being able to shoot,” Shenton said.
“And now that’s three in three with free-kicks.”
Dyson’s incredible run of form, alongside prolific strikers Benito Lowe and Harry Salt, has lifted the Ro to second place after eight fixtures in August.
Some may be surprised by the start Avro have made to their first-ever campaign at Step 3, but boss Shenton has stressed how inner belief is crucial moving forward as they look to maintain their positive start.
“Once the lads start to believe in themselves as much as I believe in them, we’ve got something really good here,” he said.
“We need to strike while we can before we get the shocks. It happens in non-league, whether it’s injuries or people moving on. It happens all the time.
“Let’s just enjoy it right now, don’t plan too far ahead.”
