'I'm delighted' - Redcar Athletic boss hails dream Step 4 debut

Redcar Athletic manager Carl Jarrett was quick to praise his squad after their first-ever season at Step 4 began with a convincing 4-1 win at Blyth Spartans.

Against a side competing in the National League North as recently as two seasons ago, Redcar produced an excellent performance on their travels to open the season with an eye-catching three points.

Forward Adam Boyes' double either side of half-time set them on their way, with Curtis Round and Bradley Fewster adding their names to the scoresheet.

Victory was all-but-assured with 30 minutes to go when Fewster netted Redcar's fourth, leaving their manager understandably keen to stress the positives of a job well done.

“It was a good three points for us today," Jarrett said post-match.

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect. We spoke before the game about just taking care of our own business, and the lads have done a great job of that today.

“I thought they all worked really, really hard. They scored some good goals and played some good football too.

“Their attitude was brilliant. It would have been easy to sit off when we were 2-0, 3-0 up.

“It’s a hard place to come, Croft Park, and we’ve come away with the three points. I’m delighted.”

Of the five teams promoted to the NPL East Division from Step 5 ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, only Redcar came away with maximum points on the opening weekend.

Their margin of victory could've been far greater too, with Oscar Fletcher, Boyes and Fewster all spurning presentable opportunities.

“I think we probably could have scored a couple more if I’m being critical," Jarrett added.

“Looking at ourselves, we’ve played some good football today. Their attitude was great, and I’m happy to get three points to start off with.”
