Martin Carruthers returns to Basford United in new role

Basford United have appointed former manager Martin Carruthers as the club's new head of football.

Carruthers returns to the Lions following their relegation from the Northern Premier League's top division, which was confirmed last month.

He previously held the position of manager on two separate occasions, the most recent of which came to an end in December 2024.

Notably, Carruthers oversaw the club's promotion to Step 3 in 2017/18, during a season which saw the club reach the 100-point mark and score 101 goals in the process.

Basford say the new role will see Carruthers "guide all aspects" of the club's first team setup, including working closely with his successor as manager, Willis Francis, on recruitment.

In a statement posted to their club website, Basford described Carruthers' return as a "perfect fit".

On his appointment, the Lions' new head of football said: "It’s great to be back at Basford. After some time out and feeling refreshed, this is a great opportunity for me in a new role.

"When Chris [Munroe, owner] got in touch to discuss it, I had no hesitation in arranging to meet.

"Willis has been a good friend for many years, and this role will enable me to support him with my knowledge and experience, and give him the best opportunity to be successful and bring the good times back to the club.

"It’s a chance to rebuild and create a positive, family atmosphere and put a smile back on the faces of our supporters.

"There’s a lot of hard work ahead, but with us all working together, this was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down."

Basford United owner Chris Munroe said: "I’m delighted we’ve managed to sell our vision for the next three years and entice Gandi back.

“I think this is a great role for Martin, and also for Willis and his management team, who can now tap into Martin’s vast experience and knowledge at Step 3/4 level.”
