Matlock Town forward announces shock retirement

Margetts' decision comes after suffering a reaction following summer knee surgery.

He became the Gladiators' first signing of the off-season back in May, returning to a club where he scored 33 goals in 28 appearances at Step 3 and subsequently earned a move to King's Lynn Town in January 2024.

Matlock say they are "understandably devastated" by the news, which was announced following discussions with the player last week.

"All good things come to an end," Margetts said in a statement.

"After years of battling knee pain and swelling with injections and painkillers, the latest surgery has been a step too far and a battle I can't win.

"It's hard to accept and one that'll take some time to process, but the level of swelling and pain I'm in daily means continuing just simply isn't an option."

The experienced striker previously represented Stamford - where he worked under ex-Matlock boss Graham Drury - and scored an impressive 57 goals in 64 appearances.

Similarly fruitful spells in front of goal came for his previous two clubs, Belper Town and Frickley Athletic, where he averaged more than a goal per game across the two spells.

Last season, Margetts also topped the scoring charts for Northern Premier League side Gainsborough Trinity with 11.

In statement paying tribute to the striker, Matlock said: "As a club, we are immensely proud to have played a part in Jonathon's story.

"Throughout an outstanding career, he has created countless special memories, many of which came during his time with us. His goals, commitment and professionalism have left a mark on the club forever, while his character and humility earned him the respect and admiration of team-mates, staff, supporters, and everyone fortunate enough to share a dressing room with him.

“Jonathon leaves the game with a legacy to be immensely proud of, but more importantly, he leaves with lifelong friendships and the gratitude of everyone connected with this football club.”
