Matlock Town part ways with manager Adam Clayton

Matlock Town have announced that manager Adam Clayton has left the club by mutual consent.

Clayton took charge of the Gladiators on a permanent basis over the summer, having finished last season as interim boss following the departure of Ryan Cresswell after just six months in charge.

Tasked with overseeing their return to Step 3, Matlock currently find themselves third in the NPL East Division table.

However, the club say that a number of their recent results, including a 3-0 defeat at Ossett United on Boxing Day, have "fallen short of the standards expected".

They have also confirmed that Clayton's assistant, Steve Eyre, has left the club.

"Adam has worked tirelessly since his appointment to try and put us in a strong position with regard to securing promotion back to step three following our relegation last season," a Matlock club statement continued.

"However, too many results have fallen short of the standards expected and it is felt a fresh approach will benefit the club’s immediate and long-term future.

"We wish to place on record our thanks to Adam and Steve for their efforts with Matlock Town and wish them nothing but the best in their future endeavours."

No timescale has been placed on appointing Clayton's successor, with the Gladiators back in action at home to Silsden on New Year's Day.
