New Workington manager appointed

Workington have appointed Billy Barr as their new manager.

The former Reds player joins the club following recent spells as assistant coach at Scottish Premiership side Dundee and with National League leaders Carlisle United as first team coach.

During a lengthy and highly respected coaching career, he has also held similar positions at Salford City, Wrexham, Sheffield Wednesday, Preston North End and Blackburn Rovers.

He will take charge of first team affairs immediately, with his first game in the dugout coming at home to Hyde United on Saturday afternoon.

"I'm looking forward to getting to work with the boys and building on what was a fantastic result on Saturday," Barr said following his appointment.

"Now we can put a little run together and bring the feel-good factor back to the football club and the area.

"Nobody wants to be in the position we are in, but unfortunately, circumstances have dictated that throughout the season so far.

"Nobody is to blame. It's just a culmination of things. We are working now to take us away from that bottom three, and we have faith in what we do and belief in the lads."

Joining Barr in the dugout will be new assistant and former Reds favourite Lee Andrews, who made more than 200 appearances for the club.

He also served as manager during a long-standing affiliation with the club, which started back in 2008.

Barr takes over a Workington side currently second-bottom of the Northern Premier League, five points from safety.
