NPL round-up | FC United and Hednesford Town maintain perfect starts
Two sides maintained their perfect start in the Northern Premier League after a busy night of midweek action.
FC United of Manchester climbed to the top of the table on goal difference thanks to a 2-0 win at Lancaster City.
Charlie Ennis fired Mark Beesley's side ahead shortly after the half-hour, with Jay Fitzmartin adding a second immediately after half-time to make sure of the points.
The only other side to record two wins from their opening two games are newly-promoted Hednesford Town, who defeated Warrington Town 2-1 at Keys Park.
After a scoreless first half, Niall Watson lashed the Pitmen in front and Elliott Johnson added a second 15 minutes from time.
Although substitute Dontai Gabidon pulled a goal back in stoppage time for the Yellows, it wasn't enough to prevent them from falling to defeat on the road as their winless start to the season continued.
The big winners on Tuesday night were Stockton Town, who hit Workington for six at the MAP Group UK Stadium.
Michael Sweet scored twice in the second half for the Anchors as they won a league game by a six-goal margin for the first time since November 2023.
Guiseley were also big winners on Tuesday night, hitting four goals without reply at home to Hebburn Town.
Hebburn's Aidan McKenzie was sent off inside five minutes and they were soon made to pay, Jordan Thewlis scoring a quickfire 14-minute hat-trick.
Taylor Bowen added a fourth from the penalty spot as the Lions bounced back emphatically from their defeat on the opening weekend.
Two of the newcomers to the division, Rushall Olympic and Cleethorpes Town, maintained their unbeaten starts on Matchday 2.
Rushall were 3-0 winners at Leek Town while Cleethorpes came from a goal down to defeat Hyde United 3-1, earning their first-ever victory at Step 3.
Having come into the latest round of fixtures top of the table after the opening weekend, Ashton United dropped to fifth after a goalless draw at home to Prescot Cables.
Elsewhere, Warrington Rylands made it four points from a possible six as Ben Hardcastle's first-half goal effort was enough to see them past Bamber Bridge.
The other two games of the night were low-scoring affairs, with Gainsborough Trinity claiming maximum points on the road at Ilkeston Town.
The only goal of the game came shortly before the hour mark, Javelle Clarke on target with a cushioned finish for the Holy Blues.
Meanwhile, Whitby Town and Stocksbridge Park Steels played out a goalless draw as the latter made their return to Step 3 after a 10-year hiatus.
