NPL round-up | Redcar go top, Rylands hit five and Workington lose at home

It was another busy Tuesday night in the NPL Premier Division, with Redcar Athletic now leading the way after the latest round of midweek fixtures.

The Steelmen were 3-1 winners at home to Avro, with a first-half double from Brad Fewster putting them in control at the break.

Benito Lowe pulled one back for Avro shortly after half-time, but Fewster completed his hat-trick inside the final 20 minutes to wrap up a ninth league win of the season for Carl Jarrett's side.

Avro missed the chance to climb up to third in the table with Guiseley, the side immediately above them, not in action until they face Leiston in FA Cup fourth round qualifying on Saturday.

The performance of the night saw Warrington Rylands end Curzon Ashton's six-game winning run in the NPL in emphatic style.

The Blues were resounding 5-1 winners at the Quickline Logistics Arena, with Ben Hardcastle and Calum Costello scoring two apiece. George Waring also added his name to the scoresheet against his former club shortly before half-time.

Curzon's defeat saw them end the night seventh in the table, below Rylands and also Gainsborough Trinity, who won 3-1 at home against Ilkeston Town.

The Holy Blues were up and running inside two minutes thanks to a Frank Mulhern penalty.

Ilkeston responded on 10 minutes through a spot-kick of their own, converted by Anthony Dwyer, but second-half goals from Ronnie Kokkinos and Ashton Offler condemned the Robins to their eighth straight league defeat.

Elsewhere, Warrington Town are only outside of the play-offs on goal difference after claiming a 1-0 win at Bamber Bridge.

An early header from Callum Edwards was enough for the Yellows to claim maximum points on their travels.

The Brig finished the game with 10 men after Ashton Cookson was shown a straight red card for a foul on Warrington winger Jack Goodwin.

Paul Carden's side have now won five of their six league games away from home this season.

Workington's recent dip in form continued as they fell to a surprise 2-1 home defeat against Whitby Town.

Led by new boss Graeme Lee for the first time, Whitby took the lead on the stroke of half-time through Stuart Rose's header.

Marley Grant doubled the Seasiders' lead before the hour, and although Luke Hunter pulled one back for Workington - his ninth league goal of the season - it proved to be just a consolation as Workington's winless run in the league stretched to four games.

In the night's other action, a close-range finish from Dom Lawson was enough to see Lancaster City past Stockton Town at The Giant Axe, while Ashton United and Alfreton Town's clash ended goalless, in a result which leaves them 15th and 12th in the table respectively.

The points were also shared at the Project Solar Stadium, where Hyde United and Quorn played out an entertaining 2-2 draw.

Goals either side of half-time from Terell Pennant put Quorn ahead, cancelling out Harry Ditchfield's 44th minute header to open the scoring.

But the Tigers earned themselves a point in the final quarter through Brad Roscoe, having appeared destined for their fifth defeat in six league games.

Tuesday's only other game in the NPL Premier Division saw FC United of Manchester come from behind to earn a point at home to Emley.

Rinor Ejupi's close-range finish had Emley ahead shortly before half-time, as they searched for their first league win in nine.

But Adam Le Fondre's second goal in as many games around the hour mark earned FC United a point, which takes them off the foot of the table.

Still though, Mark Beesley's men have won just once in the league this season and end the night four points from safety.
