Preview | Step 4 play-off finals

Preview | Step 4 play-off finals

The battle to earn promotion to Step 3 reaches its climax this Saturday, with play-off finals taking place in all three of the Northern Premier League's regional divisions.

While for some players it may offer a chance to return higher up the football pyramid, others will hope to venture into unfamiliar territory for the first time.

Here's everything you need to know ahead of all three finals.

NPL East Division - Dunston vs Stocksbridge Park Steels

You don't have to stray too far back to find the last time these two promotion contenders met.

It came on the final day of the regular season, with Luke Rawson's second minute strike enough to earn Stocksbridge Park Steels all three points at the UTS Stadium.

Seven days on, and the pair will lock horns once more in the north-east, aiming to reach the promised land.

Both encounters during the regular season saw the away side triumph - so will history repeat itself once more?

"It's second versus third. They've had one win, we've had one win," said Stocksbridge boss Ian Richards ahead of Saturday's game.

"We know how they're going to play and we know how they're going to play. There'll be no surprises.

"We've got to keep riding this wave. I think we've won 14 of the last 16 league games, which is a phenomenal achievement in itself.

"We've got to take that momentum, that winning feeling and habit. I want us to play without fear."

NPL Midlands Division - Corby Town vs Worcester City

Nine years ago, Corby Town and Worcester City were facing off in the National League North.

Fast forward to the present day, and the pair will fight it out to move to within one promotion of Step 2.

At the end of the regular NPL Midlands Division season, Corby were 12 points above their play-off final opponents, and in Fletcher Toll, they boast the division's top scorer by quite some distance.

For context, his 30 league goals mean he's netted just four fewer than Worcester's top three scorers combined.

The two finalists have won one game apiece during the season to date - with their most recent encounter seeing a remarkable seven goals shared as Worcester scored three goals in the final 10 minutes to earn a thrilling 4-3 victory.

For Steelmen boss Gary Setchell, he hopes to see his side rise to the occasion against another of the division's best-supported sides.

"I am really glad Worcester have got through, because they have got the same issue that we have," he said.

"They have got big pressure, and I think they have done a tremendous job this season because they have had some ups and downs as well.

"They have had low points but have kept going, and their fightback against us [last month] was superb.

"We have had setbacks but both kept going as football clubs. I expect a massive crowd here on Saturday with the Corby and Worcester fans, and a really good game of football."

NPL West Division - Hednesford Town vs Congleton Town

Having fallen short of automatic promotion on the final weekend of the regular season, Hednesford Town will hope to get the job done second time around.

The Pitmen last graced the Northern Premier League's top division in 2018/19 - although they did spend four seasons in the Southern Premier Central Division during the intervening period.

It has been quite some turnaround in fortunes for a Hednesford's side that received a reprieve from relegation last season, having finished second-bottom of the NPL West Division.

But strong recruitment has paved the way for a much-improved season, and they will look to finish the job against a Congleton Town side bidding for their second successive promotion.

Upwards of 3,500 fans are expected at Keys Park for Saturday's season finale - something which Hednesford boss Gavin Hurren is relishing.

Speaking to the Express and Star, he said: "The fans are massive for us, this is what we do it for. For personal achievements, yes, but also for the fans.

"Our fan base is exceptional, they are special. We need to do as much as possible to make them proud."
