‘Sheer disappointment’ - Craig Lynch reacts as Morpeth’s poor away form continues

Morpeth Town missed out on the opportunity to draw level with safety in their game in hand on Tuesday night, as they fell to a 3-1 defeat at Cleethorpes Town.

After battling from behind with 10 men for 75 minutes at the weekend against Stocksbridge Park Steels and earning a point, there would have been some optimism that the Highwaymen could ride that momentum for what would have been a second away win this season.

Unfortunately, a first-half brace for Josh Walker and a second-half penalty from Liam Hughes delivered a 12th defeat in 16 away games for Craig Lynch’s side.

“It’s sheer disappointment again,” the Morpeth manager said post-match.

“It’s frustrating because everything we showed on Saturday for 75 minutes just wasn’t there. We showed what we could do with 10 men, but not today with 11.

“It’s a mentality thing, and that’s why we are where we are in the league.”

Goals inside the opening 15 minutes of either half were real gut punches for Morpeth, and despite a slight improvement in the final half-hour, it wasn’t enough to help them stage a comeback.

It’s now just one victory in nine for Morpeth, with their winless run now standing at six games.

And with eight games of the season left, time is of the essence to save their Step 3 status.

“We did what was asked from 60 minutes on and tried to get in-behind,” Lynch continued.

“We didn’t do that in the first half and played into their hands. We had a mountain to climb straight away.

“There are some positives to take, but a lot of negatives too, because we keep shooting ourselves in the foot.”
