Walsall Wood begin summer recruitment with exciting double signing
Walsall Wood have announced the signing of midfield duo Nick Clayton-Phillips and Jack Concannon from Southern Premier League Central side Alvechurch.
Clayton-Phillips began his career in the West Brom youth steup, scoring seven goals in the Premier League 2 for their U21s side.
Following a series of loan moves away from the Baggies, Clayton-Phillips moved to Stourbridge then Alvechurch, where he made 61 appearances over three seasons.
Fellow creative midfielder Concannon has featured for numerous clubs across the midlands, including Tamworth and Sutton Coldfield Town.
During his time at Alvechurch, Concannon was part of the squad that famously reached the second round of the FA Cup in 2022/23, shocking Cheltenham Town in Round 1 before falling to then-Football League side Forest Green Rovers.
Both Clayton-Phillips and Concannon played under Walsall Wood manager Ian Long, who only arrived at the John Sylvester Stadium in November following Harry Harris' departure to Hednesford Town.
The Wood enjoyed a respectable first season in the NPL Midlands Division, finishing 11th, and have begun their summer recruitment with a shrewd double addition.
On their arrival, Long said: “[Nick Clayton-Phillps] is a former WBA pro and Jack Concannon is a very creative midfielder that has played for me against Cheltenham in the FA Cup.
“I’m really pleased that they’ve come to play for me and the club. These are two massive coups.”
