Basford stalwart departs club

Basford United have confirmed that Dom Roma has left after six-and-a-half years with the club.

The 38-year-old defender joined from Scarborough Athletic in 2017 and has since featured over 250 times for the Lions.

During his time at the club, he briefly took the reins of interim coach in 2019, going on to win the Nottinghamshire Senior Cup at Mansfield Town's ground Field Mill.

Roma has also enjoyed an illustrious career with Hinckley United, Alfreton Town, Harrogate Town and Gainsborough Trinity, making over 200 appearances for the Holy Blues and becoming their head coach in 2016.

On departing Basford United, Roma said: "It’s been a whirlwind near-seven year stay at the club with plenty of downs, but many more ups.

"From promotion, winning the Notts Senior Cup and nearly gaining promotion to the National League North, I’ll look back on my time at Basford United very fondly.

"I’d like to thank all the coaches and managers that I’ve played for previously – Martin Carruthers, Steve Chettle, Mark Clifford, Steve Kittrick and currently Jeppo – I hope you all thought I was value for money.

"I’d also like to say thanks to all the staff in-and-around the club. It’s a place where I’ve made so many friends and it will be sad not seeing familiar faces in the bar after the game anymore.

"Finally, I would like to offer a thank you and my gratefulness to Chris Munroe and his family for the support over the years. It’s been much appreciated and I wish you all nothing but success moving forward."

Basford United owner Chris Munroe added: "As owner who sanctioned the signing of Dom back in 2017, this ranks right up there as one of my best ever.

"Dom’s support and commitment, not only to me but the club, has been brilliant, and his professionalism and long-standing durability in his twilight playing days has been staggering.

"Dom knows the running joke that he can keep going until he is 50, and I truly wish him and his family all the very best and his legacy will forever remain at this great football club."
