Experienced Football League defender joins Grantham

Former Ireland U19 international Damien McCrory has joined Grantham Town.

McCrory, 32, is best-known for his time at Burton Albion, where he made nearly a double-century of appearances for the Brewers and helped them to the League Two title during the 2014-15 season.

Having signed his first professional contract with Plymouth Argyle in 2008, McCrory also enjoyed a taste of promotion when he secured promotion with Dagenham & Redbridge in the 2010 League Two play-off final.

Loan spells at Port Vale, Grimsby Town and Portsmouth also ensued, with Nuneaton Borough his most recent employers.

McCrory’s former club paid tribute to the departing wing-back earlier this week, with manager Jimmy Ginnelly describing him as a “very good character around the lads in the dressing room”.

It was mutually agreed that the Irishman would depart the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central Division side to embark on a new challenge with the Gingerbreads.

“I’m definitely happy to get it over the line, and now I can look forward to the season ahead,” he said.

“It was good to train, meet the lads and I’m happy to get started.”
