NPL Final Day round-up: Champions and play-offs confirmed

By James Gordon

Hebburn Town and Spalding United secured their respective league titles on the final day of the Northern Premier League season.

Premier Division

Worksop Town confirmed their play-off place in the Premier Division with a comfortable 2-0 win at Atherton Collieries.

That rendered results elsewhere virtually redundant, Ashton United going down 3-1 to Marine in a result that secures Marine a home play-off semi-final against Rylands, who themselves won 2-0 at home to Ilkeston Town.

Champions: Radcliffe
Play-off semi-finals: Macclesfield v Worksop Town, Marine v Warrington Rylands
Relegated: Bradford PA, Stafford Rangers, Atherton Collieries

East Division

The most tension came in the East Division as Hebburn Town eventually prevailed to win the league title with a 2-0 win at Sheffield.

Both they and nearest challengers Stockton Town were being held to goalless draws at half time, and although Stockton transpired to win 4-0 at Belper Town, they were helpless due to the Hebburn result.

Stockton will now entertain Carlton Town in the play-offs, while Dunston will host Pontefract Collieries, who squandered their own chance of being at home in the semis by drawing 2-2 at Newton Aycliffe despite taking the lead.

At the other, Bridlington Town survived relegation on goal difference thanks to a 1-1 draw at Consett.

They hung on to stay up after Brighouse Town had won 2-0 at home to Carlton Town to bring themselves level on points.

Relegated: Brighouse Town, Winterton Rangers

Midlands Division

Spalding won the Midlands Division in some style, plundering eight goals past Coleshill Town to finish ahead of Anstey Nomads, who had scored the first goal of the afternoon in their 2-1 win over Sutton Coldfield Town.

Harborough Town finished their season in third with a 6-0 win at home to Loughborough Dynamo, with Quorn securing their play-off spot with a 1-1 draw at Bedworth United.

At the bottom, three of the bottom five won meaning four teams finished on the same number of points.

AFC Rushden & Diamonds were the unfortunate one of the four, finishing in the relegation zone despite a 2-0 win at Walsall Wood.

Gresley Rovers were also relegated despite their 2-1 win over Corby Town.

West Division

Runcorn Linnets secured second place with an emphatic 5-0 win away at 1874 Northwich.

They will host City of Liverpool in the play-offs, after the Purps drew 1-1 with Witton Albion in a battle of two of the three sides vying for the final two play-off spots.

That result could have seen them both reach the play-offs, but Bootle nabbed fourth place with a win away at Hednesford Town, in a game delayed by more than half an hour due to an oil spillage on the M6.
