Jordan Hulme scored twice for the Boro - including an 88th minute winner - as the league leaders overcame stubborn resistance to record their 14th league win from 16 matches.
Below them, Worksop Town climbed up to second after a commanding 5-0 win at home to Stafford Rangers.
The Tigers have now won three home games in the space of a week, scoring 16 goals and conceding just once. Stafford, meanwhile, drop to the bottom of the division on goal difference.
Macclesfield remain in the play-off spots, despite dropping points for the first time under new boss Alex Bruce.
John Rooney opened the scoring for the Silkmen on the stroke of half-time as he chipped the Basford United goalkeeper from the halfway line. However, it wasn't enough for victory as Remaye Campbell levelled from the penalty spot before the hour mark as the two teams played out a 1-1 draw.
That result enabled Matlock Town to draw level on points with Macclesfield, thanks to a thrilling 3-2 win at home to Hyde United.
Hyde arrived at the Proctor Cars Stadium fourth in the table but could do little to stop in-form striker Jonathon Margetts. The 30-year-old scored his fifth hat-trick of the season as the Gladiators recovered from Lewis Alessandra's fourth-minute opener to pick up all three points.
Finally, Lancaster City ended their four-game wait for a goal as Jacob Holland-Wilkinson and Daniel Cowan fired them to a 2-1 victory over Ashton United.
The Dolly Blues now sit in the top half of the division ahead of Saturday's trip to Marske United.
