Premier Division Preview: 6-pointer in the Cheshire derby

By James Gordon

Two Cheshire sides hoping to stave off relegation will do battle tonight as Nantwich Town host Witton Albion.

Alongside the added element of the fixture being a clash between two Cheshire rivals, the game is poised to be a huge 6-pointer which could determine the fate of either side.

The last encounter between the two teams occurred in August which saw Nantwich edge out the tie 0-1 through a late Sean Cooke goal.

Witton sit below Nantwich in the table in 21st place, both tied on 30 points each, but the Dabbers have a better goal difference than their rivals.

More significantly, Witton have two games in hand over Nantwich, having played 29 games so far this season.

Witton have also begun to find their form as of late, winning two of their last three fixtures against Ashton United and Grantham Town.

Nantwich, while suffering two defeats in their last three games, have been performing valiantly against the division's top teams, such as against Buxton and South Shields where the Dabbers took the lead in both matches before falling short at the end of the game.

In the game where they claimed a victory, Nantwich breezed past Stalybridge Celtic 1-5 away from home, with Joe Robbins securing a hat-trick for himself.

Witton Albion's Callum Saunders will be aiming to add to his goalscoring tally of 15 this evening, with the forward hoping to become the league's top goal-scorer by the end of the season. He needs 3 more to equal the current top goal-scorer, Whitby's Jacob Louis Hazel.

Kick-off gets underway at 7:45pm tonight at the Optimum Pay Stadium.

Elsewhere in the league tonight, South Shields will be looking to extend their lead at the top of the table as they travel to Ashton United.

Kevin Phillip's men could increase the gap between themselves and second placed Buxton by six points with a victory, whereas Ashton United could leapfrog into 13th place with a win tonight.
