Premier Division round-up: FC United on top as challengers keep pace

By James Gordon

FC United of Manchester maintained their lead at the top of the Northern Premier League thanks to a 2-0 victory away at Marske United.

Regan Linney scored his 12th goal of the season, while Tavonga Kuleya also netted his first for the club as FC United ran out convincing winners at Mount Pleasant.

Their gap at the top remains at two points however, after Matlock Town bounced back from Tuesday’s shock home defeat to Liversedge with a 2-1 victory at Warrington Rylands.

Goals from debuting striker Bartosz Cybulski and John Johnston helped the Gladiators come from behind against an out-of-sorts Rylands, who are now without a league win in five matches, despite top scorer Callum Dolan’s early opener from the penalty spot.

Elsewhere, Morpeth Town moved up to third after coming from behind to beat Stafford Rangers 2-1.

Sam Fishburn scored a double as the Highwaymen kept up their fine scoring form against a similarly high-flying Rangers outfit.

At Rossett Park, Marine climbed to sixth as a Sol Solomon brace helped them to a 2-0 victory over Whitby Town.

Meanwhile, Ashton United recorded their first win in seven matches in all competitions after coming from behind to beat Stalybridge 2-1.

Dylan Moonan had given the visitors the lead after just 11 minutes, but defender Matty Regan equalised from the penalty spot four minutes after half-time before Michael Phenix put the Reds ahead five minutes later.

Injury-hit Warrington Town also climbed into the top half with a 4-0 win at Liversedge.

On-loan forward Connor Woods scored his first goal for the club, with Luke Duffy (2) and Josh Amis also finding themselves on the scoresheet at the Clayborn Ground.

In Saturday’s other matches, Harry Scarborough’s second half strike helped Bamber Bridge past Nantwich Town, while a Clayton Donaldson double wasn’t enough to stop Gainsborough Trinity being held to a 2-2 draw at home to Atherton Collieries.

And at the Raygar Stadium, Guiseley ran out convincing 3-1 winners over Belper Town, with Nicholas Walker, Callum Chippendale and Mohammed Qasim all finding the target.
