Premier Division round up: Thriller at Bower Fold as Radcliffe down Hyde

By James Gordon

South Shields mounted a remarkable late comeback at Stalybridge Celtic to extend their lead at the top of the Northern Premier League to 11 points.

Trailing 3-1 at Bower Fold, Darius Osei and Jordy Mongoy netted in the 87th and 90th minute to rescue a point for the Mariners after a six-goal thriller at Bower Fold.

Second-placed Hyde United were unable to take advantage of that result as they fell to a 1-0 defeat at Radcliffe.

Joe Piggott’s 81st minute goal helped the Boro record their 500th Northern Premier League win, climbing above Warrington Town and into third in the league in the process.

Elsewhere, a Fin Sinclair-Smith double was enough to help Bamber Bridge maintain their place in the top five with victory at home to Stafford Rangers, while Gainsborough Trinity struck two early goals to down Warrington Rylands.

The Holy Blues netted through Curtis Durose and Harry Lewis as Rylands’ winless run was extended to six league matches.

Guiseley consolidated their position in the top half with a come-from-behind 3-1 win away at Marine.

Having trailed until the final 20 minutes, Kallan Murphy levelled before Ben Smiles-Braithwaite netted two goals in second half stoppage time to secure all three points for the Lions.

Like Marine, fellow play-off chasers Matlock Town fell to a 4-1 defeat at Whitby Town.

Goals from Josef Wheatley, Shaun Tuton, Connor Simpson and Aaron Haswell were enough for the Seasiders as they climbed into the top half of the division.

In the day’s other action, a sensational free-kick from Jay Fitzmartin helped Atherton Collieries beat FC United of Manchester 1-0.

And at the Weaver Stadium, Nantwich Town came from behind to earn a first win under new manager Paul Carden and give their survival hopes a big boost.

Byron Harrison’s penalty on the stroke of half-time cancelled out Nic Evangelinos’ opener midway through the first half, before the Dabbers completed the turnaround six minutes after the break through Steven Hewitt.

Three games fell victim to the weather and were postponed, with new dates to be announced in due course.

Ashton United v Liversedge, Belper Town v Marske United and Morpeth Town v Warrington Town will all be played at a later date.
