EVO-STIK LEAGUE Newcastle Town are celebrating the success of the club's U18s side after they collected a top regional sports award.

The First Division South club's U18s were crowned 'Junior Team of the Year' at the 2014 Sentinel Sports Awards after capping an awesome final year in youth football with an astonishing 8-1 win over Alsager Town at Stoke's Britannia Stadium in the prestigious Sentinel Cup.

The win set a new record margin of victory in the competition's 120 year history and followed on from the side's April triumph in the county cup. Eight different players scored for the club's youngsters to round off a campaign that saw several players progress into the Newcastle-under-Lyme club's first and reserve teams with Jordan Cole, Josh Gordon, Callum Kenny and Callum Lovatt all tasting first team football under former manager John Diskin and his successor Ivan Lodge.

Sentinel Cup manager Gavin Appleby said "The progress of the youngster has been most pleasing and the focus on youth is massive here. It is great to win the award and a credit to the players who were outstanding."

Town Chairman Alistair Millar, pictured with other members of the club after collecting the accolade at the awards in Stoke-on-Trent last week, added: "Anyone in any doubt of the focus here, should look at how many players have progressed from the youth set up through to the reserves and 1st team. The coaching and development of players is very good and anyone wanting to progress is welcome at the club."
