Three new faces at Matlock Town

Matlock Town boss Martin Carruthers has opted for experience in the goalkeeping department with the signing of Saul Deeney from Ilkeston Town.

The Gladiators’ regular number one, Jim Pollard, received a red card in their recent defeat at Gainsborough Trinity and will be suspended for Tuesday night’s home game with Marine, so Deeney will step in.

The 39-year-old, who stands at 6’1 and was born in Northern Ireland, has signed a deal for the remainder of the season.

Deeney has featured for a number of clubs across a lengthy career in the Football League and non-league football.

He was also a title-winner last year with Ilkeston in the Pitching In NPL Midlands Division.

On his arrival, Gladiators manager Martin Carruthers said: “I’m delighted to have got Saul in. He’s vastly experienced and he’s been with me previously when I’ve won league titles at both Basford and Ilkeston.

“He’s an ex-professional footballer, super fit and ultra professional, and now we’ve got two good goalkeepers challenging for that goalkeeping shirt. He’ll be a real asset to the football club.”

The club have also started building for the future with the signing of two talented youngsters.

Goalkeeper Dylan Hough, 19, has been training with the Gladiators, while midfielder Ben Henderson from Eastwood Community has also linked up with the squad.

The signing of midfielder Harrison Taylor has also finally gone through after it had been delayed prior to Saturday’s 2-2 draw at home to Morpeth Town.

Where next?

Macclesfield appoint permanent coach Neil Danns has been confirmed as Macclesfield head coach, on a deal initially running until the end of the 2022/23 campaign.
