Football League veteran Martyn Waghorn joins Anstey Nomads

Anstey Nomads have signed experienced former Football League striker Martyn Waghorn.

Waghorn, 35, announced his retirement from the professional game back in February.

However, he has made the decision to dust off his boots and join Step 4 high-flyers Anstey, who currently sit fourth in the NPL Midlands Division.

He isn't the first high-profile name to join the club this season either. Back in October, David Nugent - a former team-mate of Waghorn at both Derby County and Leicester City - joined the club in the capacity of player-coach.

Waghorn ended his 17-year career in professional football with 527 appearances and 135 goals to his name.

He made six Premier League appearances for Sunderland early in his career but has spent much of his time in the sport playing for clubs across the Football League.

Between 2015-17, he also represented Scottish heavyweights Rangers and was part of the squad that earned promotion back to the Scottish Premiership after a four-year absence.

As well as their league success, Anstey have enjoyed a club-record run to the fourth round of the FA Trophy, including wins over Bedford Town and more recently Hartlepool United.

They will travel to another National League side, FC Halifax Town, in the fourth round on January 10.

Waghorn is eligible to play in that game, and he is also expected to come into contention for their next league fixture at home to Bourne Town in Saturday 3 January.
