Matlock Town announce return of fan favourite defender

Matlock Town have signed defender Dwayne Wiley from Alfreton Town.

Wiley returns to the club where he previously spent many successful seasons, making 185 appearances for the Gladiators between 2016-20.

He left in the summer of 2020 to link up with Alfreton, going on to establish himself as a key member of their squad in the National League North.

The 34-year-old featured 161 times for the Reds and was also named club captain.

Matlock Town boss Adam Clayton said: "I'm over the moon to get Dwayne in. Our recruitment this year is key, and I wanted a leader to add to the dressing room. With Dwayne, I think we have found it.

"He's got good quality in possession and is a real front-foot defender. I'm very much looking forward to working with him.

"Add to that the fact he has been at Matlock previously. He has a love for the club and only wants to see it go in one direction."

Wiley becomes the club's third signing in a matter of days, following on from the arrival of Buxton duo Diego De Girolamo and Tom Elliott.

The club have also convinced last season's top scorer Montel Gibson to reverse his decision to leave, and instead try to help the Gladiators return to Step 3 at the first time of asking.
