Matlock Town issue update on future of Montel Gibson amid transfer interest
The speculation surrounding Montel Gibson's move from Matlock Town has been put to bed after the club confirmed that they have rejected offers from clubs higher in the pyramid.
The 27-year-old striker was set to depart the Proctor Cars Stadium for pastures new following their relegation from the NPL Premier Division at the end of the season, but made a U-turn to pen a new two-year deal with Adam Clayton's side in May.
Gibson, a former Notts County and Grimsby Town player, joined the Gladiators in September 2024 from Hereford and went on to score 22 goals in 36 appearances.
Despite signing a new contract for the 2025/26 and 2026/27 seasons, speculation around his future at the club arose once again, with clubs higher up the football pyramid looking to secure the services of the talented forward.
In a statement released on Sunday, Matlock Town confirmed that offers had been made for Gibson's signature but were rejected, saying: “Matlock Town can confirm that following recent speculation regarding the future of Montel Gibson, the club has rejected offers for the forward from clubs higher in the pyramid and that he is committed to the Gladiators project for the 25/26 and 26/27 seasons. His deal also includes an option in the club's favour to extend to the 27/28 season.”
Gibson issued his own personal statement, burying the speculation further, adding: "Why would I want to be anywhere else?
“Best project I’ve been part of, great lads, top gaffer and a supportive chairman improving every aspect of the club and most importantly, fantastic supporters. I’m really excited for the future, as is everyone involved.”
In other news, Matlock Town have announced the signing of winger Kiyani Morris.
A former Chesterfield academy product, the 25-year-old joins the club from Northern Counties East side Wakefield AFC.
Morris has also previously turned out for the likes of Hallam FC and Shirebrook Town, and has featured for the Gladiators in their pre-season campaign.
