Montel Gibson to stay at Matlock Town after departure U-turn

Matlock Town have confirmed that talented forward Montel Gibson will stay with the club next season.

The news comes following positive talks with manager Adam Clayton and owner David Hilton.

Last month, the Gladiators confirmed Gibson's departure just hours after their final game of the season against Lancaster City.

He scored seven goals in the final seven games of the campaign but was unable to help the club retain its Step 3 status.

At the time, Matlock said that striker Gibson's decision to leave would allow him to "explore interest from a higher level".

"I’m absolutely delighted to get Monts over the line," Matlock boss Adam Clayton said.

"We all know what he brings to our team, not just the goals but his all-round contribution.

"A big thing for me is to build not only with the right players but the right people, and Monts is a big part of our dressing room, with a real ambition to help Matlock Town achieve."

Gibson joined the club in September 2024 for an undisclosed fee from Hereford and went on to score an impressive 22 goals in 36 appearances.

He finished the season as the Gladiators' top scorer, scoring 15 times more than any other team-mate.

Earlier in his career, Gibson gained Football League experience at Notts County and Grimsby Town, where he played under former Premier League manager Ian Holloway during the 2020/21 campaign.
