NPL round-up | Ashton United lead the way after entertaining opening weekend

The new Northern Premier League season got underway on Saturday, with Ashton United hitting the front after the opening round of fixtures.

The Robins soared to top spot courtesy of an impressive 3-0 win at Gainsborough Trinity, who narrowly missed out on the play-offs last season.

Darius Osei headed them in front shortly before half-time, with a second-half double from debutant Luca Navarro making sure of the points for Steve Cunningham's side in the final quarter.

Bamber Bridge and FC United of Manchester also started their season with 2-0 victories at home to Guiseley and Leek Town respectively.

Both of Bamber's goals came in the second half, while veteran forward Adam Le Fondre marked the start of his second season with FC United in style, opening the scoring in their Matchday 1 victory at Broadhurst Park.

2-1 wins away from home for Ilkeston Town and Whitby Town also saw them start the season on a positive note.

Ilkeston defeated 10-man Morpeth Town at Craik Park but were forced to withstand a late fightback from the highwaymen, who set up a grandstand finish thanks to substitute Cyril Giraud's stoppage-time goal to halve the deficit.

It would prove to be a consolation for Morpeth, who saw captain Jeff Henderson sent off shortly before half-time.

Whitby, meanwhile, came from a goal down to beat Workington at Borough Park.

Luke Ellis put the Reds ahead in the first half, but that goal was cancelled out by Michael Woods on the hour mark.

At the death, Connor Smith fired home for the Seasiders as they secured their first opening-day win on the road since the 2021/22 season.

Elsewhere, Hednesford Town enjoyed a winning return to Step 3 as Dom McHale fired them to a 1-0 win at Hebburn Town.

The final team to taste victory on the opening weekend were Hyde United, who claimed all three points at home to Lancaster City.

Jordan Scanlon proved to be the match-winner, netting for the Tigers inside the opening two minutes.

There were two goalless draws on the opening day - Prescot Cables and Stockton Town playing out a stalemate, and Warrington Town and Cleethorpes Town sharing the spoils in a largely uneventful affair at the Cal.Delivery Stadium.

The second of the Warrington-based teams, Warrington Rylands, came from behind to earn a point at newly-relegated Rushall Olympic.

Both teams finished the game with 10 men and the visitors also missed a penalty with the score at 1-1 shortly after the hour mark.
