NPL round-up | Hednesford win again, Whitby run riot and late drama for Lancaster

Hednesford Town made it three wins from three in the Northern Premier League, defeating Workington 2-0 at Keys Park on Saturday afternoon.

Having overcome Warrington Town in midweek, the Pitmen put in another assured display as second-half goals from Simeon Maye and Jonny Edwards saw them to all three points.

They are now the only side in the division to have taken nine points from a possible nine. FC United of Manchester - the only side level with them at the top after the opening two fixtures - weren't in action this weekend.

There are currently four teams that find themselves two points adrift on seven, led by Whitby Town who scored four without reply at home to Warrington Town.

The Seasiders broke the deadlock inside 15 minutes through Matty Tymon, before Donald Chimalilo made it two less than a minute into the second half.

Tymon's second came soon after to make sure of the points, before Layton Watts poked home Whitby's fourth to round off a perfect afternoon on the Yorkshire Coast.

There were also wins at home for Ashton United and Warrington Rylands, who preserved their respective unbeaten starts.

Ashton defeated Stocksbridge Park Steels 1-0, Sam Baird striking the decisive blow 13 minutes from time.

Neil Reynolds' Blues, meanwhile, were 4-2 winners against Gainsborough Trinity.

A quick start saw the hosts go two ahead inside 11 minutes, and although Jonny Margetts pulled one back for Gainsborough, Jake Burton fired home a third in first-half stoppage time to make it 3-1.

A straight red card for Burton meant the home side would play much of the second half with 10 men, but it was they who extended their lead through Dean Furman before substitute Harrison Beeden scored a stoppage-time consolation for the Holy Blues, who have won just one of their opening three league games.

The final side to have picked up seven points from a possible nine are Rushall Olympic, who battled their way to all three points away at Guiseley.

Anthony Dwyer scored the only goal inside two minutes, with the Pics forced to defend resolutely for large spells to ensure all three points would return with them to the West Midlands.

For Ilkeston Town, quickfire goals shortly after the hour mark from L'Varn Brandy and Dylan Youmbi were enough to see them past Prescot Cables at the Microlise New Manor Ground.

After successive draws to start the season, Cables were unable to go one better as they dropped to 16th in the table.

Elsewhere on Saturday, the points were shared in two matches as Cleethorpes Town's game against Bamber Bridge ended 1-1 and Stockton Town played out an entertaining 2-2 with Hyde United.

All four goals in the latter game came in the first half, Stockton letting slip a 2-0 lead against a Hyde side that battled back to pick up their fourth point of the season.

At the Giant Axe, there was plenty of stoppage-time drama for Lancaster City as they scored twice in the dying minutes to come from a goal down to beat Hebburn Town 3-2.

Trailing 2-1 with just a few minutes of additional time left on the clock, Nic Evangelinos' turn-and-finish drew the sides level in the 92nd minute before Dylan Thompson scored the winner at the back post three minutes later for the Dolly Blues.

It ended 3-2, with Lancaster picking up their first win of the campaign and Hebburn still waiting for their first point of the season.

The final game of the weekend saw Leek Town off the mark for the 2025/26 season at home to Morpeth Town.

Connor Heath scored his first goal for the club with 18 minutes on the clock, finishing off a quick counter-attack, and his close-range effort proved enough for victory.
