NPL round-up | Important wins for FC United and Emley as Gainsborough climb to fourth
Three games took place in the NPL Premier Division on Saturday afternoon, with important wins picked up by sides at both ends of the division.
The headline fixture of the weekend between Warrington Town and Gainsborough Trinity was won 2-1 by the visitors, who claimed their fifth victory in a row.
First-half goals from Ronnie Kokkinos and Harrison Beeden, either side of Reece Daly's leveller for the Yellows, were enough to see Russ Wilcox's side earn maximum points and climb to fourth in the table.
Warrington, despite their excellent away form this season, have found the going far tougher at their own ground. They are still without a home league win since a 3-0 triumph over Hyde United back in August.
The Yellows now have an identical record to their cross-town rivals Warrington Rylands, who have moved back above them into the top seven as a result of Town's third league defeat of the season.
Towards the bottom of the table, FC United of Manchester came out on top in a six-goal thriller against Whitby Town as Mark Beesley's side claimed just their second league win of the season.
Goals from Adam Le Fondre and Michael Donohue put the home side in a strong position at the break, but a quickfire double from Callum Hickman drew Whitby back on level terms.
But inside the final 10 minutes, Niall Watson scored FC United's third of the afternoon before Le Fondre made sure of the win just a few minutes later.
The Reds remain in the relegation zone, but are now third-bottom and four points from safety.
Whitby, meanwhile, will hope to regroup quickly after falling to defeat for the first time under the recently-appointed Graeme Lee.
Another side making moves up the table on Saturday were Emley, who won by a single goal at home to Lancaster City.
At a rain-soaked Fantastic Media Welfare Ground, Lewis Gould's finish shortly before half-time was enough to see the Pewits clinch their first home league win since August, climbing to 14th in the table as a result.
