Star Matlock Town forward leaves on season-long loan

Matlock Town have confirmed that striker Montel Gibson has returned to National League North side Hereford on a season-long loan.

Gibson joined the club in September 2024 for an undisclosed fee from Hereford and went on to score an impressive 22 goals in 36 appearances during his first season.

He finished the campaign as the Gladiators' top scorer, scoring 15 times more than any other team-mate.

Gibson scored seven goals in the final seven games of the season but was unable to help the club retain its Step 3 status as they were relegated to the NPL East Division.

The future of Gibson appeared uncertain over the summer, with Matlock confirming his departure after their final game of the 2024/25 season, before he made a dramatic U-turn and instead penned a new two-year deal with Adam Clayton's side in May.

He has already scored four times this season in league and cup.

On the 27-year-old's departure, Matlock said: "Montel has struggled to fit playing and training with the Gladiators around his work commitments this season, with the extra travelling set to have a huge impact on his personal, family and business life.

"We wish Montel well for the rest of the campaign."
