‘We’re a humble group’ - Gainsborough not getting too carried away with play-off dreams

‘We’re a humble group’ - Gainsborough not getting too carried away with play-off dreams

Gainsborough Trinity manager Russ Wilcox has stressed that his group won’t get too high as they continue to bang on the door of the top five.

The statement came after the Holy Blues’ 3-0 win at Ashton United on Tuesday night, in one of their many games in hand.

Goals from Jonny Margetts, either side of an Ashton Offler header, ensured a return to winning ways after drawing with title challengers Hednesford Town on Saturday.

Tuesday’s triumph was their third win in four, with clean sheets in all three wins, taking their tally to an impressive 12 in 24 games.

“It was an outstanding performance from the group,” Wilcox said post-match.

“We started the game well, Jonny got the first, and then we just built on it. 2-0 can be a funny scoreline, but once we got the third, it made things more comfortable.

“This is a tough place to come. They’re a good outfit with a good manager and, like us, are pushing for the play-offs, so to come here and beat them 3-0 is a great return.

“It was a nice feeling seeing us three up and knowing we were going to collect three points. The big part of the last five minutes was keeping that clean sheet, which we did.”

The Holy Blues are now four points behind Stockton Town in fifth, with two games in hand, and six points off Warrington Rylands in fourth, but with four games in hand.

There’s still plenty of the season to go though, and even with the prospect of climbing into a play-off position with wins in their extra fixture, anything can happen in the remaining months of the campaign.

Therefore, the message from Wilcox is to remain grounded, take it one game at a time, and see where they are, come the end of April.

“Hopefully we can keep this form up, that’s 10 points of the last 12, and we have games in hand. But we’re not going to get too excited,” he said.

“We’re a humble group. When we win, we make sure we don’t get too high, and when we lose, we make sure we don’t get too low.

“So, we’ll keep doing that until the end of the season, and see where it takes us.”
