Worksop Town captain commits future to club

Worksop Town have confirmed that defender Hamza Bencherif has penned a new two-year deal with the club.

The Tigers skipper, 36, joined the club in 2022 from Guiseley and has since made 80 appearances.

The former Nottingham Forest and Macclesfield Town centre-back was instrumental in their 2022/23 promotion-winning season, and will now remain with the club until 2026.

Speaking about his new deal, Bencherif said: "I am always proud to wear the colours. Ever since I came to this club, I feel like I have belonged here with the way it’s run – we’re like one big family.

"From the moment I signed two years ago, we knew what our plan was: we wanted to take the club as far as possible.

"The conversation [with Craig Parry and Pete Whitehead] was a short one. I love the club and the fans, and regarding the gaffer and the chairman, we’re in it together and we have big ambitions for the club, so it was a simple discussion.

"Wee still have the same ambitions, but it was just a formality of getting it done as early as possible. I am not going to shy away from it, the ambition is to get the club into the National League levels.

"We have everything we need to achieve that; we just need to put in the performances on the pitch, and that’s my part as captain.

“I still have a lot of fire in myself and the changing room knows how strong we are. We have great characters that fit the club and they get on with the fans, so this deal is just the continuity of how it’s run in maintaining stability to progress, and that’s why we are successful.

"It’s no secret to anyone that I and the players want to be here, and want to achieve the goal that we set when we started our adventure.

"It also shows the leadership of the football club and the manager, and that’s why it attracts good players.

"They do things early doors, and they avoid leaving space for doubt because it’s a consistent and stable approach that the gaffer has.

"That’s the best way to do it, and that analogy makes the club as strong as it is."
