Worksop Town striker to make one-off Matlock return

Prolific Worksop Town frontman Liam Hughes will make a one-off playing return for Matlock Town later this month, all for a special cause.

Former Gladiators captain Hughes is one of a number of players who will feature in an upcoming testimonial match for Adam Yates on Sunday 17 March.

Yates is being recognised by the club for his 15 years of service, with plenty of familiar faces returning to the Proctor Cars Stadium to help recognise his contribution to the club.

Last month, Hughes completed his first 90 minutes since October, after an injury-disrupted season which started with 15 goals in his first 13 matches in all competitions.

An ankle injury sidelined Hughes for a number of weeks, but he continued his comeback from injury with a goal in the Tigers' 3-1 victory at Parkgate in the semi-finals of the Sheffield & Hallam Senior Cup at the end of February.

Hughes is not the only former captain to be taking part, with Ryan Qualter also set to feature.

Qualter left the Gladiators little over a year ago to join National League North side Scarborough Athletic, with a change in the player’s work commitments cited as a key factor behind the move.

Yates' testimonial will see a Gladiators Legends side take on the Matlock All Stars, with kick-off at 1pm.

The fixture will also raise money to support the work of Ashgate Hospice, an independent charity based in Chesterfield that provides care to patients with a life-limiting illness.

Tickets for Adam Yates' testimonial can be bought here.
