NPL round-up | Big wins for Cleethorpes and Avro as five teams maintain perfect starts

The Owls swept aside Quorn, in what was their first-ever home game in the division.

Callum Ainley had the visitors ahead inside the opening quarter, then goals from Callum Foster and James Blunden within 10 minutes of the second half gave them some breathing space.

Captain Blunden netted his second 16 minutes from time to make it four, with a stoppage-time fifth from substitute Aaron Braithwaite adding further gloss to a huge result away from home.

It was a similarly impressive night for Step 3 newcomers Avro, who thrashed Bamber Bridge 6-1 at Irongate.

Ryley Smith and Harry Salt both scored twice for the Ro as their fairytale start to life in the division continued.

Bamber Bridge's goal came in the 71st minute courtesy of Archie Lang, who has been the subject of interest from National League AFC Fylde in recent days.

Another who made it two wins from two with three points on the road were Ashton United.

Summer signing Kurt Willoughby scored his first goal for the club three minutes into the second half as the Robins returned to Greater Manchester with the points.

Stockton's task of finding a leveller became even harder 14 minutes from time when Lewis King was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Elsewhere, Warrington Town continued their perfect start after easing past Hyde United at Cantilever Park.

Defender Scott Butler's deflected strike opened the scoring for the Yellows seven minutes before half-time, with further goals after the break from Reece Daly then Zayn Sadiq with the third in stoppage time.

At the Fantastic Media Welfare Ground, a pair of first-half goals from Anthony Dwyer and Ash Hunter helped Ilkeston Town to a 2-1 win over Emley.

The Pewits responded before the hour mark through captain Jack Cowgill but couldn't find the equaliser as the game wore on, meaning their wait for a first league win of the season continues.

There was no such trouble for fellow newly-promoted Bury, who edged a five-goal thriller against Curzon Ashton.

Curzon actually led 2-1 at half-time at Salford Van Hire Gigg Lane against their Greater Manchester neighbours, Tony Weston scoring a double after Tom Carr had broken the deadlock for Bury on 33 minutes.

Two headed goals in the space of 10 second-half minutes turned the game back in favour of the Shakers.

And despite Curzon winning a late penalty, Mitch Allen denied Weston his hat-trick from the spot as Anthony Johnson's side held on to win.

Bury's opponents on the opening day, Redcar Athletic, also picked up their first three points away at Workington.

It remained goalless throughout a contest which seemed destined to end level, despite Workington's Kai Nugent being sent off with little over 20 minutes to play.

But Brad Fewester, who was only brought on in the 94th minute, slammed the winner past Workington goalkeeper Alex Mitchell in the sixth minute of stoppage time to snatch victory for the Steelmen.

In the night's other games, a stunning long-range effort from Lancaster City's Jim Craig was enough to see the Dolly Blues pick up their first points of the season at home to Warrington Rylands.

It was a similar story for Alfreton Town - beaten on the opening day of the season - as they were 2-1 winners at home to Gainsborough Trinity.

Siyabonga Ligendza put the hosts ahead inside the opening minute, and it remained 1-0 until the final quarter when Dylan Youmbi doubled their advantage.

Ashton Offler reduced the arrears with 11 minutes to go, and despite Alfreton seeing Kasper Williams sent off for a second bookable offence, they hung on for the points.

Tuesday night's only other win saw Guiseley bounce back from their opening day defeat to Warrington Town by winning 2-0 away at Whitby Town.

Two goals in the space of six second-half minutes from Lions forward Aaron Martin proved to be the difference on the Yorkshire Coast, with both sides having now won one and lost one of their opening two games.

The only other game of the midweek round in the NPL Premier Division came at Broadhurst Park where FC United of Manchester and Leek Town went in search of their first points of the season.

And having taken the lead nine minutes before half-time through Connor Heath, it looks like it would be Leek who got their season up and running.

But deep into second-half stoppage time, Adam Sudworth heading home for FC United on the rebound to snatch a point in their first home game of the season.
