NPL round-up | Redcar's unbeaten start ends, Gainsborough hit six and Stockton out of relegation zone

NPL round-up | Redcar's unbeaten start ends, Gainsborough hit six and Stockton out of relegation zone

It was another thrilling Tuesday in the NPL Premier Division, with Cleethorpes Town ending the night two points clear at the top.

The Owls recorded their eight league win of the season, defeating Hyde United 1-0 at the HPS Plant Hire Stadium.

Billy Fewster's eighth-minute strike proved to be the difference, inflicting a third defeat in four upon Hyde.

Craig Rouse's Cleethorpes climbed back above Redcar Athletic, whose unbeaten start to the season came to a sudden halt.

The Steelmen were beaten 3-1 at Curzon Ashton, with a first-half brace from Alex Curran and a further goal from Brad Holmes giving Curzon an unassailable half-time lead.

Danny Rowe pulled one back for Redcar, but it did little to prevent them from falling to defeat on the road.

Elsewhere, Guiseley climbed to third in the table after a 2-0 victory at Ilkeston Town.

Goals in either half from Amir Berchil and Jordan Thewlis saw the Lions return to winning ways in the league, following the disappointment of a 1-0 defeat at Alfreton Town seven days prior.

Guiseley are now the division's in-form side, picking up 22 points from their past 10 games.

Over in Cheshire, Workington stretched their unbeaten run in the league to eight games after earning a 2-2 draw at Warrington Town.

Quickfire goals before half-time from Callum Edwards and Ewan Bange had put the Yellows ahead, cancelling out Brad Carroll's 12th-minute opener.

But Brennan Dickenson levelled for the Reds 15 minutes from time, earning a point which sees them end the latest round of midweek fixtures fifth and Warrington Town ninth.

A point was also earned by Warrington's cross-town rivals Warrington Rylands, who staged a second-half fightback to draw 3-3 at Leek Town.

Alex Hurst's first-half double helped Leek to a 3-1 half-time lead, but that was wiped out by the midway stage of the second half as Ben Hardcastle pulled one back before Harrison Wood scored his fifth goals in the Blues' last three league games.

Neither side could muster a late winner, with the in-form Wood going closest for the visitors.

Meanwhile, Alfreton's strong home form continued as Lewis Salmon struck to earn his side a first win over FC United of Manchester in eight years.

It proved to be a special match-winning moment just before the hour mark for Salmon, who had previously made 133 appearances for the club and recently returned on a one-month loan from Chorley.

Of the night's other action, Gainsborough Trinity were the biggest winners, running riot away at Whitby Town.

Five different players were on the scoresheet for the Holy Blues in a 6-2 victory on the Yorkshire Coast, as they made it four NPL games unbeaten on the road in style.

Stockton Town, meanwhile, climbed out of the bottom four with a crucial victory at home to Bury.

The Anchors left it late to snatch all three points, Frank Nouble finding the telling contribution after 89 minutes.

Another side towards the bottom that picked up a positive result were Quorn, who came from two goals down to earn a point at home to Ashton United.

Two goals in six minutes saw Ryan Beswick's men claim a share of the spoils, but they remain the only side in the division yet to win at home.

Tuesday's other scheduled game between Emley and Bamber Bridge was abandoned due to fog. The Brig had led 3-0 at the time of the abandonment.

There is still one game to come this midweek, with Lancaster City making the trip to Avro on Wednesday night.
