'Officially the greatest' - Macclesfield break NPL points record

Macclesfield boss Robbie Savage's has lauded his side's "remarkable" exploits about they broke the Northern Premier League record for points amassed during a single season.

Back-to-back wins over Easter ensured Macclesfield moved onto 106 points, surpassing Darlington's tally of 104 which had held the record for almost a decade.

Last month, the Silkmen clinched the title and earned promotion to the National League North with six games to spare.

Their latest record-breaking exploits were confirmed on Easter Monday, with Savage's side forced to dig deep to overcome Leek Town and move 26 points clear at the top of the division.

Speaking after Monday's win, Savage said: “Officially the greatest ever team at this level of football - 106 points. It’s just remarkable what that team, those players, have achieved this season.

“There was huge pressure. There was negativity when I took the job, from some of our own, but what that team have enabled us to do is prove doubters wrong.

“I’m so pleased for them. My staff and I know what we’re doing - all we have done is try to educate and enable our team to go out onto the pitch and give the best of themselves.

“Every time they have crossed that white line, they have been absolutely incredible.

"The achievements, not only to win the league, which was huge pressure, but also to go and smash every single record that has been in the league, are remarkable.

“Just let that sink in - the greatest team ever at this level of football since the league was formed. I owe that group of players everything."

In the days which followed their promotion success, Macclesfield handed new deals to 10 members of their title-winning squad.

Exciting forward D'Mani Mellor followed suit and extended his stay days later, with the club fending off reported interest from teams in the leagues above.

When asked about the players at his disposal, Savage confirmed that his existing squad will get the opportunity to prove their worth in the league above.

He has also ruled out making wholesale changes to his side over the summer, saying: “We are like a family in there, and we want to do it together next year.

"People have asked why I am not more ruthless and bring more players in - those players are good enough.

"They’ve proven that this season, and they’ll be good enough next season. I’m delighted that they’ve all signed new deals.

"I believe in them, they believe in me and my staff, and I couldn’t be prouder of that group.”

Macclesfield's memorable season will conclude with a home game against Whitby Town on Saturday.

Thousands of tickets have already snapped up and a near-sell-out is expected as the club prepare to lift the Northern Premier League trophy after the full-time whistle.
