Football in Stamford can be traced back to 1870, with various early clubs forming and disappearing over the next two decades. A major turning point came in 1894, when the town’s two leading sides — Stamford Town and Rutland Ironworks — agreed to merge. The new club initially adopted the Ironworks name, seen as the stronger of the two, but in 1896 switched to Stamford Town “to give the club a higher profile”.

It would be some years before the club became known as “The Daniels”, a nickname honouring Daniel Lambert, “the heaviest British man ever… buried in St Martin’s churchyard”.

The club’s first match was played on Hanson’s Field, the site of Wothorpe Road, and remarkably the ground has been used continuously ever since. Evidence even suggests football was played there in the early 1870s, making it a rare contender for the world’s oldest football ground. Stamford enjoyed early success, winning the Younger Cup in their first season and adding several trophies over the next decade, including prestigious Hinchingbrooke Cup victories in 1907 and 1908.

Encouraged by their progress, Stamford turned professional in 1909. Within three seasons they won the Northants League, and in 1913–14 enjoyed their best FA Cup run to that point, reaching the 5th Qualifying Round before losing 2–0 at Chatham.

Financial difficulties struck in the late 1930s, prompting the club to take a season’s break in 1939 — only for war to intervene. Football resumed in 1945, and after a year in the Peterborough League, Stamford returned to the United Counties League. The post‑war years brought notable cup success, including the Lincolnshire Junior Cup (1949), UCL Knockout Cup (1952), and Lincs Senior Cup ‘B’ (1952 & 1954). Crowds were strong, with a record 4,200 watching a 3–3 FA Cup draw with Kettering in 1953.

The club moved through the Central Alliance (1955) and then the Midland League (1961). The 1960s were challenging on the pitch, though 1961 did see Arsenal visit Wothorpe Road for a 9–0 win marking the town’s quincentenary.

A major revival began in 1972, when Stamford returned to the UCL under former Peterborough United manager Norman Rigby. The club reached the FA Vase semi‑final in 1975, then won the UCL league and cup double in 1976, and reached Wembley, losing narrowly to Billericay in extra time. Stars of the era included Malcolm Hird — later voted Stamford’s Player of the Century — and prolific striker Dick Smith.

Under Hird’s management from 1979, Stamford dominated the league, winning three straight UCL titles, multiple cup competitions, and returning to Wembley in 1980, where “goals from Keith Alexander & Andy McGowan giving Stamford a 2-0 win” secured FA Vase glory. A third Wembley visit followed in 1984, though Stansted edged the final 3–2.

The late 1980s and early 1990s saw talented players progress to the professional ranks, and in 1994 the appointment of Steve Evans sparked another resurgence. Evans brought in high‑profile signings — including Trevor Quow, Milton Graham, Micky Gynn, Scottish international David Speedie, and even Olympic decathlete Daley Thompson — and Stamford won back‑to‑back UCL titles, plus the Lincs Senior Cup ‘A’ and Hinchingbrooke Cup, earning promotion to the Southern League.

The club’s debut Southern League campaign was eventful, with Evans departing for Boston United mid‑season. Under Billy Jeffrey, Stamford rebuilt with younger players and finished 18th. League restructuring placed them in the Eastern Division for 1999–2000, where an 11‑match unbeaten start helped secure 17th place.

In 2003–04, a seventh‑place finish earned Stamford a place in the Southern League Premier Division for the first time. Relegation followed, but new manager Graham Drury led the club back up via the playoffs in 2005. Stamford briefly topped the Premier Division table in early 2006, and in 2006–07 won the Lincolnshire Senior Shield.

In 2007, the club was transferred to the Northern Premier League, but suffered immediate relegation. Drury returned in 2012, guiding Stamford to promotion via the playoffs under Wayne Hatswell, and in 2013–14 the club won the Lincolnshire Senior Trophy.

The 2014–15 season marked the end of an era at Wothorpe Road. Stamford played their final match there on 22 November before moving to the Zeeco Stadium, where their first home league win came dramatically on the final day of the season — the only result that would keep them in the Premier Division.

The 2015–16 season was turbulent, with managerial changes and eventual relegation. However, 2016 brought a historic moment: Stamford reached the FA Cup First Round Proper for the first time, beating Wrexham away in a replay before losing to Hartlepool.

The following years saw playoff pushes (2017–18), mid‑table stability (2018–19), and a promising 2019–20 campaign halted by COVID‑19. The club reached the FA Trophy last 32 in 2020–21, finished runners‑up in 2021–22, and reached the FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round in front of 3,002 at Stockport.

In 2022–23, Stamford won the NPL Midland Division by nine points — their first league title in 25 years — returning to Step 3. They then recorded their highest‑ever league finish in 2023–24, again pushing for the playoffs, and remained competitive in 2024–25.

The 2025–26 season was more difficult, with the club spending much of the year in the relegation zone before recovering after Christmas.

Summer 2026 brought major change: long‑serving manager Graham Drury and chairman David Whitby departed, and the 2026–27 season begins with Ant Fenton leading a newly rebuilt squad.
