Cyrus Gets Grenada Call

Frickley Athletic defender stars for national team.

Frickley’s recent signing David Cyrus swapped the Tech5 Stadium for a World Cup Qualifier in the Caribbean last Saturday after being selected for the Grenadian national side.

Foregoing the exotic climate of autumnal West Yorkshire, David played the full 90 minutes as Grenada went down 3-0 at home to Belize in the CONCACAF North Central America and Caribbean Group 3.

Grenada are climbing up the pecking order of the CONCACAF ladder, having finished runners-up at the 2008 instalment of the Caribbean Cup and fourth last time out in 2010 to make their first appearances at the region’s showpiece Gold Cup. With a more professional set-up than in previous FIFA World Cup qualifying cycles and the likes of ex-Football League players Delroy Facey and Craig Rocastle in the side they are tipped to spring a surprise in a group also containing Guatemala and St Vincent and Grenadines.

Cyrus now has 10 caps for his country and will be looking to add to that total when he travels out for Grenada next group game, on 18th September in St Vincent, missing the Blues FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round tie at Garforth Town.
