End of an era at Prescot Cables

At the end of the season, Prescot Cables will say goodbye to a man whose association with the club spans more than three decades.

It has been confirmed that Cables club physio Alan Cross will retire at the end of the 2023/24 season.

Cross began working for the club in 1994 and has treated hundreds of players during his time in the role.

He was joined on the pitch by his family for the club's final home game of the regular season last weekend as they overcame Stalybridge Celtic 2-0 to strengthen their play-off hopes.

Barring a major goal swing on the final weekend, Cables need just one point from their away game at Trafford to make sure of a top-five spot.

A well-respected figure at the Joseph Russell Stadium, Cables captain Liam Hollett and manager Steven Daley were quick to pay tribute to Cross and his impact within the local footballing community as he prepares to step away from the club at the end of the season.

"Crossy's journey with Prescot Cables is one defined by unwavering dedication and selflessness," Hollett said in Cables' matchday programme.

"From the early days of taping ankles to late-night treatments after gruelling matches, Crossy's commitment to the wellbeing of our players has been unmatched.

"His expertise, paired with his genuine care and compassion has been a cornerstone of our team's success."

Daley added: "I would like to thank Crossy for the great work he has done.

"Alan has been an unbelievable servant to the footballing community. His reputation is second to none and he will be a massive miss, not only as a physio but also an integral part of our team.

"I have known Crossy from as far back as I can care to remember. What I will say is that not only is his professionalism outstanding, he is also a great man.

"I would love for him to stay on with us, but he has earned his retirement and we all wish him the very best."
