The tall 21-year-old, who earned a pro contract at Preston North End after impressing in the club's centre of excellence and youth team, was added to the weekend's official weekly round-up of player movements on Friday after switching from EVO-STIK League North rivals Bamber Bridge in time to play in the first qualifying round.
Heaton, pictured in action, arrives with National League experience from spells with both Tamworth and Stalybridge while on loan from the Championship's Lilywhites and was part of the academy team coached by Rams boss Mark Fell in the summer. At the time, he was the subject of a bid from Darlington which only fell through after he broke his collar bone.
Fell told fans in a club statement that he was delighted with the arrival of a player he knows he can count on from day one. “Josh is a big, strong lad who loves the old fashioned defensive parts of the game," said the Rams boss.
"He’s trained with us for the last week and really impressed, he’s fitted straight into the group and I know he’ll be a great asset to the club.”
