After an encouraging 4-0 victory at the home of neighbours Mossley, Danny Johnson not only secured the Willow Wood Cup (named after a local hospice which benefits from the annual pre-season competition) he added three new players to his Ashton United squad for the forthcoming Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Premier Division season.
Former Curzon Ashton winger Wayne Cahill caught the eye with two well-taken goals and there were solid contributions from Peter Wright (once an FA Trophy winner with Burscough and well-known in non-league circles) who has joined from Bamber Bridge; and George Melling, an experienced defender from Kendal Town who has also featured at Morecambe, Altrincham and Lancaster City, amongst others.
A number of trialists also featured in the win at Mossley, however competition for places is going to be tough with the majority of last season's League Cup winning squad also returning for duty last night.
