Stalwart hails hot-shot's big move

Buxton vice-chairman Tony Tomlinson has been hailing Marc Roberts after the EVO-STIK League club's former hot-shot completed his big money move to Birmingham City.

The big centre-half was snapped up by Harry Redknapp's Blues on a five year deal this week from Barnsley after skippering the Tykes last term.

Originally signed on loan in 2012 by Bucks boss Martin McIntosh, himself a former centre-half with the likes of Hibernian, Rotherham United and Huddersfield Town, the 26-year-old rose to prominence at Silverlands before switching to FC Halifax Town in July 2013 and then Barnsley two years later in 2015.

In a statement paying tribute to the 6' 4" defender, former chairman and Bucks stalwart Tomlinson also lauded the continuing success of manager Martin McIntosh in developing the careers of talented young players in the EVO-STIK League's top flight.

Tomlinson said: "There's a feeling of considerable pride at Buxton Football Club after former favourite Marc Roberts made a big-fee transfer from Barnsley. Nor was Roberts a fluke as Martin has since developed the talents of two more young centre-backs who have progressed up the pyramid - Ash Palmer who was transferred to North Ferriby United and is now with Guiseley while teenager Danny Burns last season moved up two levels when he was transferred to Gateshead."

* Nearly a thousand fans were at Silverlands on Sunday to see a Buxton Legends XI beat a Manchester United XI featuring Sammy McIlroy and Frank Stapleton 6-4. The now annual fixture was described as "another superb 'Legends' afternoon" by delighted Bucks officials after all-time record scorer Mark Reed claimed yet another hat-trick for his collection.
